Abstract

Aliphatic hydrocarbons are converted into cyclic, particularly aromatic hydrocarbons by contacting them for periods of 6-50 seconds at temperatures of 400-700 DEG C. with a granular catalyst comprising a major proportion of a refractory carrier of low catalytic activity supporting a minor proportion of a more active catalyst selected from compounds, particularly oxides of titanium, zirconium, cerium, hafnium, and thorium. The reaction may be effected at pressures of 0,25-7 atmospheres. The preferred carriers are oxides and silicates such as alumina, magnesia, bauxite, Montmorillonite clays, bentonite clays, kieselguhr, silica, firebrick, and glauconite. The proportion of active catalyst to carrier may be less than 10 per cent. The catalyst may be in the form of shaped pellets or granules of 1,6-8 mesh per cm. The reaction is effected in the absence of water vapour. The treatment of paraffins and mono-olefines having 6-12 carbon atoms is described. Specification 483,184 is referred to.ALSO:Aliphatic hydrocarbons are converted into cyclic, particularly aromatic hydrocarbons by contacting them for periods of 6-50 seconds at temperatures of 400-700 DEG C. with a granular catalyst comprising a major proportion of a refractory carrier of low catalytic activity supporting a minor proportion of a more active catalyst selected from compounds, particularly oxides, of titanium, zirconium, cerium, hafnium, and thorium.
