Abstract

Complex double compounds containing metals, which are useful as additions to hydrocarbons, e.g. gasoline, lubricating oils, tar oils, and brown coal products, as anti-detonants, anti-oxidants, or improvers, comprise the reaction products of an alkali metal derivative of an aromatic hydrocarbon with a complex compound formed of an inorganic or organic non-noble heavy metal compound and a completely alkylated and/or arylated compound of nitrogen, phosphorus or sulphur not substituted in the alkyl or aryl group. The radicle attached to the metal in the latter complex compounds is thereby replaced by an aromatic hydrocarbon radicle. Examples are given of the preparation of cuprophenyl-triethyl phosphine, nickel diphenyl-triethyl phosphine, cuprophenyl-trimethylamine, and silver a -naphthyl-triethyl phosphine. In addition, the following components are referred to: pyridine, triethylamine, tripropyl phosphine, triphenyl phosphine, thioether, ethylene diethyl sulphide and dibutyl sulphide. Specifications 476,329 and 477,673 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the preparation of compounds containing as a component a completely alkylated and/or arylated compound of arsenic, antimony, selenium and tellurium not substituted in the alkyl or aryl group, e.g. triethyl stibine, dimethyl selenium and dimethyl tellurium. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Complex double compounds containing metals are prepared by interaction of an alkali metal derivative of an aromatic hydrocarbon with a complex compound formed of an inorganic or organic non-noble heavy metal compound and a completely alkylated and/or arylated compound of nitrogen, phosphorus or sulphur not substituted in the alkyl or aryl groups. The latter complex compounds may be obtained by bringing the components together in the presence or absence of a solvent. The reaction is preferably effected in an inert solvent or dispersing agent and with exclusion of air and moisture. The products are useful as additions to hydrocarbon mixtures, e.g. as anti-knock dope in the case of gasolines and as anti-oxidants or improvers in the case of lubricating oils. The inorganic or organic non-noble heavy metal compounds may be halides, sulphates or phosphates, or derived from organic acids, alcohols, phenols or mercaptans, whilst as complex formers therewith are mentioned pyridine, trimethylamine, triethylamine, triethyl phosphine, triphenyl phosphine, thioether and ethylene diethyl sulphide. Examples describe the preparation of (1) cuprophenyl-triethyl phosphine from cuprous chloride-triethyl phosphine and lithium phenyl in benzene solution; (2) nickel diphenyltriethyl phosphine from nickel chloride-triethyl phosphine and lithium phenyl in benzene; (3) cuprophenyl-trimethylamine from cuprous bromide-trimethylamine and lithium phenyl in ether; (4) silver naphthyl-triethyl phosphine from silver chloride-triethyl phosphine and lithium b -naphthyl in benzene. The treatment of cupropropylmercaptide-tripropyl phosphine and cuproiodide-dibutyl sulphide is mentioned. Specifications 476,329 and 477,673 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the use as starting materials of complex compounds derived from a completely alkylated and/or arylated compound of arsenic, antimony, selenium and tellurium not substituted in the alkyl or aryl group, e.g. triethyl stibine, dimethyl selenium and dimethyl tellurium. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
