Abstract
483,397. Load - handling machines for coils &c. STEVENS, A. H. (United Engineering & Foundry Co.) Dec. 10, 1936, No. 33956. [Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A coil unloader for use in a continuous hot strip mill between a strip reel and coil-receiving means, such as a conveyer, comprises a tiltable transfer device which automatically adapts itself to coils of different width. The coil 3 is stripped off the mandrel 2 of a reel 1, by means not shown, on to a concave carriage 17 which is supported at one end by rollers 16 riding in a channel 14 in each of the parallel vertical sides of a frame 11, and at the other end by a shaft 21 riding in the eye of a link 22 rigidly mounted to a shaft 23 journalled in the frame 11. The shaft 23 extends through the frame 11 at one side to carry a crank on the pin of which are attached balance weights, the number of which is chosen according to the estimated weight of the reel 3. The stripped reel abuts against back uprights 18 on the carriage 17 and its weight tilts the link 22 against the balance weights till the carriage strikes against an extending arm 27 on the frame 11. The frame 11, together with the carriage 17 and coil 3, are then lowered till the uprights 18 pass between the sprockets 6 of the conveyer and the coil 3 lies on the chairs 4 thereof, the lowering being effected by spur gearing 31, 32. The shaft 33 of the wheel 32 is driven by an electric motor through worm-gearing, which does not allow a heavy coil to fall at a greater rate than a light one, the rate in each case being that allowed by the normal speed of the motor. In order to permit the unloader to transfer coils from a reel which is not in line with a conveyer, or from several reels on to a single conveyer, the device may be mounted on a truck having wheels 41 riding on rails 42 at one side and rollers 43 on the other side running in an H-section beam 44 which prevents tipping of the apparatus about the rail 42 when very heavy coils are being manipulated. The truck is driven along the rails by an electric motor working on both wheels 41 through wormgearing. When a small coil is being transferred, filler blocks are placed on the carriage 17 to prevent its rolling sideways. In a modification, the carriage has a purely sliding movement in the frame 11, being advanced to receive the coil, and retracted carrying same, by a piston operated by fluid pressure either automatically or at will. The frame 11 is tilted through 90‹ by a toothed segment engaged by a pinion driven by a motor through worm-gearing. In this form the apparatus is stationary, and the conveyer tail is combined therewith.
