Abstract

<PICT:0482903/III/1> <PICT:0482903/III/2> A method of proofing or coating hollow articles such as paper bottles, cups, or containers, in which the containers are carried into, through and out of a body of liquid by angularly displaceable arms moving in a vertical plane, is characterized in that the containers are placed mouth downwards over the free ends of the arms when the latter are above the surface of the liquid and are caused to enter the liquid and emerge therefrom with their mouths down and with a tilting movement such that buckling or crumpling of the walls of the containers is avoided. An apparatus for carrying out this process is shown, comprising a bath 2 of coating liquid, e.g. paraffin wax, and a rotatable spindle 4 carrying radial arms 6 to support the containers A. The axis of rotation of the spindle 4 is slightly above the level of the liquid, and the spindle may be intermittently rotated by pressure upon the pedal 10. Heaters 3 may be provided, and the bottom of the bath may be curved, or curved guides may be provided thereon against which the bottoms of the containers may bear during their passage through the liquid. The arms 6 may all be arranged in one plane, or a plurality of staggered sets of arms may be provided along the length of the spindle 4. According to the Provisional Specification, the arms need not move entirely in a vertical plane, but may be caused to move through the liquid in a substantially horizontal position.
