[Class 52 (ii)] The chair is carried by a member 20 pivoted at 25 to the upright 2, and a pair of spring seatings 47 on opposite sides of the pivot coact with opposing spring seatings 40, 41 to hold springs 45 which are both compressed as the chair is tilted. The screwed spindle 2 carries fixedly a casing 1 of box formation with upper and lower spring seatings 47 on opposite sides of the pivot pin 25 of the chair-carrying member 20, which pin passes through the spindle 2 and carries loosely a box-shaped lever 30 with spring seatings 40, 41 opposing the seatings 47. A projection 62 on the chaircarrying member abuts a screw 60 adjustable in a projection 63 on the lever 30 to transmit the tilting movement to two rubber springs 45 arranged between the seatings, adjustment of the screw 60 determining the initial compression of the springs. The spring seatings are formed by projections on the parts engaging a central hole 50 formed in each spring and in the horizontal or non-tilted position shown the seatings diverge outwardly to facilitate the introduction of the springs, which have at their ends metal plates 51 with depressions adapted to engage both the projections in the seatings and the holes in the springs. In the fully tilted position the spring seatings converge outwardly preventing escape of the springs. Stops 55, 56 on the fixed casing 1 limit the tilting movement.
