Abstract

482,306. Resilient connections; universal joints. MAIER, F. E. Sept. 28, 1936, No. 26273. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In mechanisms (other than a resilient support for a vehicle wheel mounting in the form of a telescopic tubular guide device, as described in Specification 470,227) such as aircraft and vehicle spring struts, vehicle steering columns, machine tools, deep boring devices, &c., having two relatively-axially movable components, relative rotary movement between which is prevented, a resilient unit is rigidly secured at its ends to the two components and is constructed so that on relative axial movement of the components it is compressed or extended appreciably in comparison with its normal length while resisting torsion about its longitudinal axis. The resilient pneumatic unit shown in Fig. 1 comprises a helically-wound, flexible tube 1 surrounded by and connected to a cylindrical fabric member 2 carrying members 6 which separate it from members 7 adapted to prevent lateral movement. Fig. 2 shows a spring made, for example, from tubular spring steel 8 which is slotted by milling, the slots 9 being separated by bridges 10 alternately arranged at 90‹ to each other. In another construction, a left-handed helical spring is screwed into a right-handed spring, the points where the coils cross being connected by pins &c. In further constructions the spring is composed of (a) interconnected, annular or wavy members or cup-shaped members ; (b) interconnected, rectangular spring plates; and (c) interengaging, serrated rings.
