Abstract

479,444. Vehicle hoods. MALTBY'S MOTOR WORKS & GARAGE, Ltd., and REDFERN, F. H. Aug. 5, 1936, Nos. 21539 and 27165. [Class 108 (i)] In folding hoods for vehicles of the type in which the main pillars are pivoted towards the rear of the vehicle and preferably carry the cant rails a double acting hydraulic cylinder and ram is provided on one or both sides of the vehicle and is pivotally connected to the main pillar directly or indirectly to the body for collapsing and erecting the hood. As shown the main pillars 10 are pivoted at 11 to a rigid extension 32 of the chassis frame 33 and pivoted to the pillars 10 at 13 are the rear sections 12 of the cant rails the front sections 18 being hinged at 17 to the rear sections 12. The latter are provided with extensions 14 pivoted to anchor links 15 pivoted to the chassis at 16. The control links 19 pivoted to extensions of the pillars at 20 are connected to the cant rails by links 34, 35 and hoop sticks 23, 25, 26, 27 are provided. The hood frame is adapted to be erected and collapsed by double acting hydraulic means comprising one or more cylinders and rams or pistons mounted with one part pivoted to the chassis with the other part pivoted to the pillar or pillars 10. As shown the hydraulic means includes an electric motor 58 adapted to drive a pump 57 arranged on the same axis the motor being operated from the vehicle batteries 59 under control of a dash-board switch 60. Referring to Figs. 1, 3 and 5 the pump 57 delivers pressure fluid to both sides of the piston 55 by means of ducts 71, 70 and 66, valve 68 being open and valve 65 being closed. Owing to the diminished area of one side of the piston by reason of the area of the piston rod 44, 51 the differential pressure causes the hood to be erected while if required to fold the hood the valves 65, 68 are reversed whereupon the pressure fluid is delivered to the cylinder on that side of the piston conected to the piston rod the other side of the piston being relieved of pressure and connected to the reservoir 63 and pump input 62. The pump may if desired be hand operated. If desired the link 35 in the hood frame may be dispensed with, appropriate stops being provided between the link 34 and cant rail or control rod 19.
