[Class 83 (iv)] In a machine for applying and welding transverse wires 1 to longitudinal wires 4 in the production of wire netting, the longitudinal wires 1 are arranged between the electrodes 2, 3 and the transverse wires brought over them to effect the weld. The cross-wire feed is effected by drums 5, 6 on a shaft rotated intermittently by ratchet-and-pawl mechanism &c. Pairs of co-operating, insertion shuttle-like grippers and tongs-like grippers 9, 10 are arranged on the drums and are reciprocated longitudinally by stationary cams 11, 12. Each gripper 9 is supplied from a spool of wire 14 in the drum 5. The wire passes over directing and tensioning pulleys 17, Fig. 2, in a slot in each gripper 9, then beneath a spring- controlled locking-device 20 to an axial bore 18. The grippers 9. 10 are moved inwardly together by the cams. Each gripper 10 carries a rod 23 which through links 22 operates jaws 21 to grip the wire. Each rod 23 is operated to grip the wire by a lever 25 which through a roller 26 engages a stationary stop 27. The grippers move from the bottom position to the top position drawing the wire 4 across the wires 1. The upper electrode 2, which is normally spaced from the electrode 3, is lowered and effects the weld. Shears 29 cut of the wire 4, and an abutment 30 is operated by a cam 34 and rack-and-pinion mechanism 31, 32 to release the jaws 21.
