Abstract

Homogeneous reaction masses are prepared by reacting (a) resols of low molecular weight obtained from a methylene containing agent and meta-substituted phenols (the substituents in the meta-position containing at least four carbon atoms) with (b) substances of high molecular weight which (1) contain carboxylic groups, (2) are substantially neutral and are of aliphatic nature rich in oxygen or of aliphatic, aromatic, hydroaromatic or mixed aliphatic-aromatic nature. Suitable substances include resin acids, fatty acids derived from fats, ester gum, coumarone resins, phthalic acid resins, drying oils, waxes, pitches, rubber, acids derived from waxes, castor oil, blown fatty oils, blown linseed oil, monoglycerides, neutral natural or artificial resins, dammar, maiti gum, novolacs, polyindene, polystyrene, polyvinyl or polyacrylic esters, urea or amine aldehyde resins, reclaimed rubber, stand oil, asphalt, bitumens, tallow, mineral wax, depolymerized rubber, guttapercha, over-polymerized oils, or factise. Suitable meta-substituents include saturated hydrocarbon radicals and radicals of such types as -- CnH2n + 1, -- CnH2n + 1 --CnH2nOH, --CO.CnH2n + 1, -- O.CnH2n + 1, --S.CnH2n + 1. The phenol and the methylene body are preferably condensed in the presence of strong alkaline catalysts and at low temperatures. In examples (1) 3 : 5-diethylphenol, 3 - methyl - 5 - isopropylphenol, m - butylphenol, 3 - butyloxyphenol, 3 - a - hydroxylamylphenol, 3 - isoamyloxyphenol, tert. butyl - 3 - hydroxyphenylcarbinol, 3 - oxohexylphenol, hexyl - 3 - hydroxyphenylcarbinol, cyclohexyl - 3 - hydroxyphenylcarbinol, 3 - a - heptenylphenol, decyl - 3 - hydroxyphenylcarbinol, or 1-hydroxy-3-bornyloxybenzene is condensed with aqueous formaldehyde in the presence of a strong alkali and the products blended with resin esters, phthalic acid resins, castor oil, drying oils, chinawood oil, natural artificial or reclaimed rubber, or pitch. The products may be used in the manufacture of moulded articles, of floor or wall coverings, of varnishes, enamels, cements, adhesives or impregnation agents. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the preparation of products from phenols wherein the substituents in the meta-position contain 2 or 3 carbon atoms and includes examples using as phenol m-xylenol, m-ethylphenol, m-ethoxyphenol, m-oxopropylphenol and m-a -hydroxypropylphenol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
