Abstract

479,144. Vehicle wheels - arrangement. NORTH, O. D., HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. Aug. 27, 1936, No. 23562. [Class 108 (ii)] A detachable wheel-unit mounting for vehicles comprises a carrier with transversely related coaxial stub-axles, an upright member supporting the carrier, jacking means for effecting relative sliding movement in the vertical direction between the carrier and the upright member and means at the lower end of said upright member for detachably connecting it to the vehicle frame. The upright member 14, Fig. 2, has a cylindrical horizontal boss portion 16 housing a bush 22 in which is rotatably mounted the conical portion 17b of a pivot pin 17 connecting the wheel unit to the chassis 1 of a vehicle frame. The pin is provided with a conical portion 17a engaging a hole in a member 18 and a reduced portion 20 fitting into a hole in a further member 19 of the vehicle frame to which it is secured by a nut 21. The cylindrical portion 16 is secured on the pin 17 by a washer 25 and a collar 23 engaged by a screw 24 and also retained by a pin 27 through which passes a safety pin 27a. The stub-axles 3, Fig. 1, are mounted in a tubular carrier portion 5 slidably mounted on the upright 14 which is preferably of triangular cross section with the apex portion directed towards the rear of the unit. A plate 28 and a liner of brake-lining material are held against the flat face 14a by screws 29 and a V-shaped plate 30 is pressed against the rear portion of the member 14 by bolts 31 locked by nuts 32. A locating plate 33 secured to the lower side of the carrier 5 carries a ring on which is mounted a rubber ring 36 which engages with a ring 37 on the portion 16 of the member 15 if heavy road shocks are encountered. The connection between the upright 14 and the axle carrier 5 is effected through a shock absorber comprising rubber rings 39 and interposed metal plates 40 which is attached at its upper end to a substantial cap plate 42 which is in contact with the lower member 44a of a roller thrust bearing 44. The upper member 44b is engaged by a collar 45 on a jack formed by screwed spindle 43 which is rotated to effect the longitudinal movement of the upright 14 relative to carrier 5 in order to lower the pin 7 and chassis 1 towards the ground for the removal of the wheel unit after the removal of the pin 27, screw 24a, collar 23 and washer 25. The screwed spindle is formed with a squared end 43a on which is fitted a locking collar 46 which carries spring-pressed plungers 48 adapted to engage one or more holes in the cap member 42 and which is retained by a transverse pin 47. Brakes may be operated by rods 11 attached to a plate 10 rocked by an arm 12 connected to an operating cable. The carrier 5 may be rotatable about the axis of the upright 14 in order to allow additional and independent steering of the rear wheels.
