[Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] Temporary beams for supporting floor and like shuttering comprise two adjustable interfitting portions 1, 2, of invertedchannel shape, releasably secured together by clamps 3, and provided at their ends with centrally disposed, upwardly projecting supporting members 9, the two portions being removable separately from the set concrete, after release of the clamps, by rotation about the supported ends. To prevent displacement of the beams during the casting process, they are secured by suitable means, such as bolts or wire ties 21, to the reinforcing bars of the floor structure, which is preferably assembled in the manner described in Specification 227,522, [Class 20 (iv)], the ties being cut after the concrete has set in order to permit removal of the beam sections. The beams are maintained in a vertical position by means of rods 13 inserted in slots 14 at the ends of the beams and extending from one beam to another. As shown in Fig. 4, preformed blocks 13 may be laid upon the beams 16, which latter are connected by the ties 21, to bars 20 resting on the upper surfaces of adjacent blocks, concrete being deposited over and between the blocks. Instead of using permanent shuttering, temporary shuttering comprising metal sheets 23, 24, Fig. 6, may be laid upon the beams 16, with the edges of adjacent plates spaced apart along the beams, and spaced apart or overlapping in a direction perpendicular thereto. The spaces 25 between the plates are filled with sand or other suitable material, and temporary or permanent beams or the like placed upon the supporting beams. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, rubber and wooden strips 28, 31, are placed upon the beams, the rubber strips being removed after the concrete has set, and imitation beams, electric light, or similar conduits, attached to the members 31. Alternatively, the spaces between the shuttering members may be occupied by the lower portions of beams which remain embedded in the soffit and project slightly therefrom, and which may be suitably coloured. If the soffit is to have a permanent surface of cork sheeting, or the like, such sheets may be laid upon the temporary supporting beams and the shuttering members dispensed with.
