478,974. Friction elements; compound sheet materials. STEVENS, A. H. (Raybestos Co.) Sept. 1, 1936, No. 23931. Drawings to Specification. [Class 140] A friction element for clutches comprises a body of woven or braided asbestos treated with a friction augmenting agent in which part of the body contains also a hardened binder such as condensation products of phenols or cresols with aldehydes such as formaldehyde or acetaldehyde, or proteins such as casein hardened with formaldehyde. In making splined elements of the kind described in Specification 244,325, [Class 80 (ii)], sheets of woven or braided asbestos-covered wire are frictioned with rubber composition, the whole or only those portions from which the splines are to be cut is saturated with a phenolformaldehyde resin, and the sheets are plied, cured in a mould and cut to form the splines. The asbestos-covered wire strands in each ply are. preferably disposed fanwise, e.g. at an angle less than 90‹, in relation to the strands of adjacent plies.
