Abstract

478,961. Vibration-dampers. SARAZIN, R. R. R. July 23, 1936, No. 20457. Convention date, July 24, 1935. [Class 108 (iii)] In order to damp vibrations in a non- rotating body, such as an engine or machine, at least one mass is pivotally mounted eccentrically on a rotary shaft which is associated mechanically with the body so that it cannot move axially relatively thereto, the mass, however, being free to oscillate axially of the shaft. When the invention is used to damp the transverse vibrations of a number of aligned engine cylinders, the shaft may be rotated, e.g. through a gear transmission connected to the driving shaft of the engine. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 the masses 5 are enclosed in a casing 6 keyed on the shaft 4 and separated from the periphery 7 of the casing by rollers 10 which engage grooves 8, 9 in the casing and masses. In another construction, Fig. 4, each mass 5 is bifurcated to engage the opposite sides of a plate 11 fixed to the shaft 4, co-operating holes 12, 13 in the plate and mass being engaged by pins of smaller diameter than the holes to allow the necessary movement of the mass. Specification 478,962 is disclaimed. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also constructions which now form the subject-matter of Specification 478,962 referred to above and in which a mass or masses are suspended in pendulum fashion, or from two spaced pivots, eccentrically from the crankshaft axis of a reciprocating engine. It further comprises the construction shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled) in which masses 5 are free to roll in spherical recesses in a flywheel fixed to a shaft 4 driven by an electric motor and rotatably mounted in a casing, axial and torsional vibrations of the shaft being damped by the inertia of the masses. The invention is also stated to be applicable for damping vibrations in aeroplane wings. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
