Abstract

478,779. Heating vehicles. VAPOR CAR HEATING CO., Inc. March 1, 1937, No. 6102. Convention date, April 20, 1936. [Class 64 (ii)] Steam is supplied from a pipe A through regulating valve B, Fig. 3, and distributing valve C, Fig. 4, to a radiator D. Condensate is discharged through valve C, and pipe 32, to the casing of the regulating valve B. The valve member 6, Fig. 3, is actuated through links 14, 15 by a thermostatic capsule 12 subject to the condensate which is being discharged. If steam reaches the capsule 12. the valve 6 is closed. The distributing valve C comprises a rotary member 24 which, in the position shown allows steam to pass from pipe 17 through port 31 to pipe 36 and thence to the radiator D, while condensate returns through pipe 37 to port 33, pipe 32 and port 9 of valve B. Space 19 communicates through passage 40 with pipe 44 through which drainage is discharged. When the space heated reaches the desired temperature, thermostat E, acting through relay F moves valve 24 to connect chambers 18, 23 and therefore pipes 17, 32. The radiator system is cut off and closed, except to the drainage space 19. After the steam is condensed, the system is prevented from filling with air by the provision of a check valve H opening away from the valve C. The pipe 46 may lead to any discharge point, but is preferably connected to the return pipe 32, which is open to the atmosphere through the casing of the valve B. An additional check valve 47 is provided. The system avoids the delay incurred when air has to be expelled from the radiator system after a reopening of valve C.
