Abstract

478,744. Echo - sounding apparatus. HUGHES & SON, Ltd., H., and SPROULE, D. O. July 30, 1936, No. 21073. [Class 118 (ii)] In an echo-sounding system in which an oscillatory member, oscillating synchronously with the emitted pulses, is used to enable the instant of receipt of the reflected pulse to be ascertained visually, the oscillating member and the pulse emitter are electrically controlled by mechanically coupled switches. The pulse responsive device may be a flashing lamp but is described as a magnet which co-operates with a number of elastic cantilever elements arranged adjacent the scale. The oscillatory member may be a cantilever or a swinging beam. As shown motor o drives cams n and m which control the emission of the pulses and energization of magnet l respectively. When magnet l is energized the bar a is attracted and spring q is compressed. Cam m opens the circuit of magnet l at or near the moment of emission of a sound pulse so that spring g swings bar a about pivot b against the action of restoring spring r. Bar a carries magnet d close to the array of elastic cantilevers h so that when the echo is received by receiver f, some of the cantilevers h are displaced and their whitened or silvered surfaces h<2> are visible in the slot h<3> so that their positions can be ascertained on scale t. The bar is restored by spring r and is held by magnet l until the next pulse is emitted. Specification 454,569 is referred to.
