Abstract

478,442. Metal girders. AKTIEBOLAGET NORDISKA ARMATURFABRIKERNA. Aug. 4, 1936, No. 21485. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1935. [Class 20 (ii)] The section of a girder or profile iron has a form which is derived from a standard girder or profile iron of the same type, cross-sectional area, height, and width by omitting from the section a part of the material most remote from the neutral axis X ... X corresponding to the maximum moment of inertia of the section so as to leave ridges 1, and material is added to the section nearer the said axis and so distributed in relation both to this axis, and to the axis Y ... Y corresponding to the minimum moment of inertia that the ratio between the plastic and elastic moduli of the section obtained with respect to the axis X ... X is increased as compared with that of the standard section, while at the same time, the coefficient of form of the section as compared with that of the standard section is reduced. The calculation of the elastic modulus is based, as usual, on the assumption that the yield point of the material has been reached in the outermost layer of the section only, and that the stress at the neutral axis is zero. The calculation of the plastic moment of resistance is based on the assumption that the material of the section has become plastic throughout so that a stress equal to the yield point of the material constantly occurs in all layers of the section from the outermost layer to the neutral axis. The coefficient of form of the section is defined by the expression F/I where F is the cross-sectional area, and I the minimum moment of inertia of the section, and the desired decrease in this coefficient is therefore obtained by so distributing the material in the section as to increase the value of I. The ridges should have a width of about 1/9th to 1/3rd of the width of the profile, and a height of about <1>/15th to <1> /25th of the total height of the profile. The section may be so formed that the ratio between its plastic and elastic moduli, as referred to above, amounts to at least 1.1. Figs. 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 show respectively the application of the invention to girders of I, channel, Z, angle, and T form, material being omitted to leave ridges 1 and added beneath the flanges as indicated in - dotted lines. The girders shown in Figs. 4 and 6 are modified by the provision of additional ridges 2 which are of the same dimensions as the ridges 1 ; the width of the flanges of such girders is increased somewhat in comparison with the width of the corresponding standard section, but the ridges 2 do not cause any alteration in the cross-sectional area or height of the section.
