Abstract

Coating-compositions comprise a non-ferrous metal powder in a liquid vehicle comprising chinawood oil to which has been added while hot an acetate, preferably cobalt acetate. The acetate treatment prevents gelling of the oil. The chinawood oil may be heated to 170--200 DEG C. with a small quantity of cobalt acetate and it may then be mixed with a small quantity of litharge. The coating-composition may contain oxide of lead for preventing electrolysis, a resin such as phenol-formaldehyde or other phenolic resin, Kauri gum, or esterol. It may contain a drier such as manganese linoleate and other compounds of manganese, cobalt and lead. The metal powder may be copper, aluminium, zinc or lead, and preferably it should be of a fineness to pass through a 300 mesh screen, of density not exceeding 1,2 grams per cubic centimetre, and should be of irregular flakiness. Other ingredients specified are boiled linseed oil, xylene, dipentene, turpentine, benzol, benzine, zinc oxide, iron oxide, chrome oxide, mercuric oxide, zinc chromate, and silex. The composition may contain bronzing liquid, a mixture of Kauri gum, boiled linseed oil and benzol. The compositions may be used for coating wood, metal, or other surfaces for preventing corrosion, attack by insects, and the growth of organisms, and may be used as underwater coatings for ships. In this latter case linseed oil is omitted and mercuric oxide is added. Preferably, the iron oxide should be omitted and chrome oxide used instead. When making the composition, the metal powder and other powdered constituents may be mixed dry, then mixed with the combined liquids which are added gradually with stirring. The paste obtained may be ground in a mixer, then in a flat stone disc mill, and then thinned with the remainder of the combined liquids.ALSO:Coating compositions comprise a non-ferrous metal powder in a liquid vehicle comprising China wood oil to which has been added while hot an acetate, preferably cobalt acetate.
