Abstract

477,452. Vacuum-cleaner nozzles. ELECTROLUX, Ltd. June 30, 1936, No. 18131. Convention date, July 2, 1935. [Class 8 (i)] A suction nozzle for vacuum cleaners includes an outlet member adapted to be connected with a suction conduit, a nozzle body having a large suction mouth and an auxiliary nozzle element having a mouth of smaller dimensions mounted on the nozzle body for rotary or pivotal movement or for lateral displacement relatively to said body from an inoperative position into an operative position and adapted in the latter position to cut off automatically communication between the outlet and the large suction mouth of the nozzle body. In one form, Fig. 1, the small mouth 14 is rotatably mounted in the large mouth 10 which is integral with the connecting socket 11 ; the parts are secured together by a screw 16 passing through the end plate 15<1> of a semi-cylindrical bracket 15, and a ball- and-spring detent 22, 23 is provided. In the position shown, communication between the large mouth 10 and the suction conduit is cut off by the part 13 of the small mouth 14 ; by rotating the latter through 180‹ the mouth 14 is cut off from communication with the suction conduit by the bracket 15 and the large mouth 10 communicates with the suction conduit through a port 20 in the cylindrical part 13 of the small mouth 14. A weight may be provided in one of the limbs of the small mouth 14. The small mouth 14 is deeper than the mouth 10 so that when the former is in operative position the latter is held clear of the surface being cleaned. In a modification, Fig. 5, the small mouth 30 is pivotally mounted at 34 within the large mouth 31. In the position shown, the whole air stream flows through the small mouth 30 ; when the latter is moved about its pivot the large suction mouth 31 is put in communication with the suction conduit 33. The part 30 is moved by a lever 35 provided with a counterweight 36 ; alternatively a snap-over spring may be employed. In a modification, Fig. 9, the small mouth 40 is laterally displaceable within the large mouth 42 by means of a rod 41, a ball-and-spring detent 47, 48 being provided. In a modification, Figs. 11, 12, the socket 95 of the nozzle body 94 contains a rotatable member 97 having slots 98 ; in the position shown, the whole of the nozzle communicates through the slots 98 with the suction conduit ; by rotating the member 97 through 90‹, suction is limited to the end of the member 97, the body 94 being then put out of communication with the suction conduit. The nozzle may be provided with resiliently mounted supporting rollers arranged at the ends of the nozzle limbs. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a number of modified forms of nozzle. In one form, Fig. 11 (Cancelled), the nozzle body 52 is rotatably mounted on the part 51 and has mouths 55, 56 communicating through ports 61, 62 with the chamber 57 in constant communication with the suction pipe 50 ; a valve device 58 including balls 59, 60 is provided so that that mouth which is uppermost is automatically rendered inoperative. In a modification of this form, Fig. 14 (Cancelled), the valve comprises a pivoted flap 76, and the larger mouth is provided with a brush 82 and a buffer ring 84 of rubber. In both these forms the edge of the smaller mouth is provided with undulating recesses. In another form, Fig. 18 (Cancelled), the end of the connector 91 is rotatably mounted in the nozzle body 85, 87, the suction mouth 86 communicating with the suction tube 92 through one or other of the ports 89, 90 which are of different sizes. In another form, Figs. 24 (Cancelled) and 27 (Cancelled), the nozzle body 101 having the large mouth 100 contains a valve member moved by a handle 105 ; in the position shown, the whole of the nozzle communicates with the suction conduit ; by rotating the valve member through a small angle suction is limited to the end of the valve member the limbs of the nozzle being then put out of communication with the suction conduit. In another form, Fig. 28 (Canceled), the nozzle body 108 is provided with flaps 109 which confine the suction to a part of the nozzle, and which can be moved to inoperative position by a lever device. In another form, Fig. 34 (Cancelled), a box 112 is movable vertically. In another form, Fig. 37 (Cancelled), the nozzle is provided with a pivoted flap 115. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specincation as accepted.
