Abstract

477,386. Paper; barrels, pails, containers, cans, &c. MUSHER, S. March 26, 1936, Nos. 9035 and 9036. Convention dates, March 29, 1935 and March 17, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 96] [Also in Group XVII] Edible products such as bread, lard, margarine, butter, cheese, cream, fish, and fruit are protected against oxidative changes such as rancidity, loss of flavour and discolouration, by the use of packaging materials such as paper, cardboard, wood or metal, with which is incorporated the flour of seeds or grains, in particular oat flour and soya bean flour, or the product obtained by extracting such seeds or grains with molten wax. In the case of paper, cardboard, &c., the flour may be mixed with the pulp from which the paper is made, or it may be dusted on the wet surface of the paper during manufacture, or the paper may be dipped into a suspension of the flour in water, glycerine, &c. More usually, however, the oat flour &c. is applied as a coating in wax, size, or lacquer, this method being applicable also to wood, metal and other surfaces. Where wax or lacquer coatings are normally employed, these may contain the extracted substance or the flour may be included in such normal coating ; alternatively, the normally-coated paper may be furnished with a second coating containing the flour, or the latter may be distributed on the initial coating, and rolled in as by calendering. There may be treated in this manner the caps such as used for ice-cream, butter, &c., the cardboard boxes used for cereal products, the wooden pails for butter, fish, &c., the barrels for holding lard, oil, &c. (in this case the flour is applied and worked into the silicate coating), the cans employed for foodstuffs, the flour being carried by a lacquer coating, and the glass containers having a wax or lacquer coating. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of " anti-oxidants " generally, and mentions phenols such as hydroquinone and pyrogallol, and substances such as gum guaiac, and lecithin, and includes legumes, grasses, leaves and twigs. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
