Abstract

476,979. Compound sheet materials. SAMSONOW, E. A. C. DE. Dec. 30, 1936, No. 35697. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1935. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXIII] A compressed laminated wood product, produced by joining wood veneers by heat-hardenable resins or other cement which does not impregnate the wood, adhesion being effected at a high temperature and a pressure sufficient to close up the cellular structure of the wood substantially wholly, has entirely embedded in it metal in the form of granules, flakes, filaments, or wire fabric. The product is suitable for the manufacture of brake linings, clutch discs and the like and balls for games may be turned from it. In an example, the product being suitable for the last purpose, 2 mm. thick beech wood veneers dried to a moisture content of about 10 per cent are covered with a thin layer of a synthetic resin solution, and sprinkled with finely granulated lead, the weight of lead being equal to that of the sheets. After drying in air, a pile of the sheets, with their grains either in the same direction or cross, is pressed at a temperature of 145 to 150‹ C. and a pressure of 200 kilograms per square centimeter. The product has a density of about 2À5. By substituting for the lead fine turnings of copper or brass, a product suitable for clutch discs is obtained. In another example, brass gauze of 0À5 mm. wire with 5 mm. meshes is immersed in synthetic resin and a pile consisting of alternate sheets of the gauze and of 2 mm. beech veneers is compressed. Sheets cut from the product at a slant to the veneers are suitable for brake linings. In a further example, 1 mm. birch veneers coated with synthetic resin are secured together in pairs by compressing rollers, a warp of copper wires 0À2 mm. thick with 2 mm. spaces between them being introduced between the two sheets. The pairs are then coated with resin, dried, piled with the wires either parallel to or crossing one another, and compressed at 100 kilograms per square centimeter at a temperature of from 140 to 145‹ C. The product is less hard, and gives a less fierce braking or clutching action, than that previously referred to.
