Abstract
476,763. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.) July 14, 1936, No. 19513. [Class 112] [Also in Group IX] A sewing-machine attachment is operated by the needle bar to lay loops of yarn at the stitching point for attachment by sewing to a backing, and, optionally, to cut the loops. The attachment is carried on a frame 9 secured on the presser bar by a screw 10 passing through one of the series of holes 9x. The frame has a presserplate 13 for holding the backing m on the throat-plate 6 for feed by the dog 8 in the usual way. The edge 13x of the plate 13 forms a guide for the previously stitched row of loops and ensures uniform spacing. A hardened metal ring 14 is fitted in a circular cavity 12a of the frame, Fig. 4, to provide a bearing for a circular disc 15 which forms one element of the rotary yarn laying member. The disc 15 is fitted with a ratchet-wheel 16 with five teeth 16a, a tubular hub 17 and a yarn carrying tube 18. The yarn is led through a guide 19 coaxial with the hub 17, before being passed through the tube 18. A spindle 21 is journalled in the hub 17 and carries an arbor 23 about which the loops l of yarn are wound by rotation of the disc 15. The ratchet 16 is given a partial rotation for each reciprocation of the needle bar by a spring-pressed pawl 25 pivoted on a stud 27 carried by a bracket 26 on the needle bar 3. The arbor 23 is curved as shown in Fig. 4 to supply loops of yarn l, Fig. 2, to the stitching point. The arbor has a loop-supporting finger and an extension which underlies the frame 9. This extension may form a stationary blade co-operating with the moving blade 41 carried by the lever 37 operated by a roller 42 on the stud 30, Fig. 2, carrying the pawl 25. The curved shape of the arbor causes the loops l to tend to slide down to the stitching point. To ensure uniform presentation of the loops to the needle, loop-feeder fingers 33 are provided. These form part of a plate 34 mounted on and reciprocating with the needle bar. The fingers are spring-pressed and slide down the arbor, pressing the yarn loops forward. The fabric formed by stitching and cutting the loops l of yarn is shown in Fig. 8.
