Abstract

Halogen-containing derivatives of rubber, guttapercha, balata and synthetic rubber such as methyl butadiene (excluding polyhaloprenes such as polymerized chloroprene) are milled, with or without solvents, with basic materials which retard their decomposition under heat and mechanical treatment. Amorphous rubber hydrochloride, made by treating rubber with liquefied hydrogen chloride at low temperature, or crystalline rubber hydrochloride made by passing gaseous hydrogen chloride through a rubber solution at ordinary temperature, or mixtures of the two, or rubber chloride, or a product obtained by chlorinating a partially chlorine-saturated rubber hydrochloride may be used. The rubber hydrochloride may be bleached with hydrogen peroxide or chlorine water, or the rubber itself may be so bleached. Rubber from centrifuged latex or vulcanized rubber may be used. The basic materials may be oxides of calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, aluminium, nickel, zinc, cobalt, titanium, tin, antimony or lead, or barium hydroxide, or carbonates of barium, calcium, strontium, magnesium, sodium or guanidine, or dibenzylamine, amylamine, hexa-methylene-tetramine, diphenylethylene diamine, benzylamine, diphenylamine, benzylamine, benzylamino phenol, benzalamino phenol, tetramethyl diamino diphenyl methane, diphenyl guanidine phthalate, guantol or dibenzyl aniline. These basic materials are usually milled in with hexamethylene-tetramine. To the composition may be added during milling (1) rubber age retarders such as amylamine, hexamethylene tetramine, phenyl-b -naphthylamine, (2) plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, amyl benzene, butyl stearate or oleate, a mixture of o- and p-toluene ethyl sulphonamides, stand oil, phenyl acetate, "Reogen" (sulphonated mineral oil), petrolatum, transformer oil and other mineral oils, amyl lactate, methyl hexyl ketone, paraffin, (3) fillers &c., such as silica, asbestos, clay, whiting, barytes, blanc fixe, metal powder, ground cellulose, wood fibres, (4) pigments or dyes, (5) rubber (natural or synthetic), (6) hardeners such as rosin, glycerol abietate, hexachlorethane, abietic acid. Sheets calendered from the milled mixture may vary in colour from transparency to black. The mixture may be moulded under heat and pressure.
