Abstract

475,577. Rectifying alternating currents. ALLGEMEINE ELEKTRICITATS-GES. May 18, 1936, No. 14114. Convention date, May 17, 1935. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXVII and XXXVI] A magnetically-operated electrical interrupter comprises a magnet supported so as to be capable of oscillation in one plane, as by being mounted on a flat spring, and to actuate a make-and-break device in so doing, the magnet being disposed in a rotary magnetic field in such a way that this field causes the magnet to oscillate in said plane, the magnet and its support being mounted in such a way that the plane of oscillation of the magnet in the field can be rotated. As shown in the Figure, a Gramme ring 1 is wound and energized by A.C. to produce a rotating magnetic field and within the ring is mounted so as to be angularly adjustable a permanent magnet 2 carried by a blade spring 3 with contacts 4 on opposite sides adapted to co-operate with relatively-fixed contacts 5, 6 also carried by blade springs. As the magnet is only free to oscillate in one plane, adjustment of its angular position within the ring 1 varies the phase displacement of the contact engagement with relation to the phase of the current energizing the ring. Thus, if the interrupter is employed as a rectifier, this rectified current being fed to a measuring instrument, the phases of two electrical quantities may be compared by comparison of the angle shown by the indicating dial 10 through which the knob 7 is rotated to the positions in which maximum deflections are obtained. The period during which the contacts remain in engagement during the vibration of the magnet 3 may be varied by adjustment of the screws 8. Alternative methods of producing a rotating field may be employed as, for example, a shaded-pole electromagnet or rotating permanent magnets. As the contacts are mounted near the fixed ends' of the blade spring, carrying the magnet, the screws 8 may be adjusted so that contact is made during almost the whole movement of the magnet.
