Abstract

475,464. Manufacture of glass wool. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO.. Ltd. (Hall, C. A.) Feb. 19, 1937, No. 4986. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXXVI] A retainer for the active material of accumulators consists of glass wool of which the strands are held together by being permanently bent as by the application of heat and pressure. The retainer may be made by placing glass wool between two screens and subjecting it to heat in a muffle until the glass is softened, the weight of the upper screen compressing the wool and bending the softened strands. The whole is then cooled, the strands of glass becoming permanently set in their compressed condition. The mat of glass wool may be temporarily held together by adhesive which is removed by the heat treatment or by the application of a solvent after the heat treatment. In another method of making the retainer, glass wool is loosely intermingled and passed on a conveyer through an oven and then compressed by rollers while in a softened condition.
