[Classes 36 and 38 (i)] In a cable system comprising insulated high-tension conductors disposed in a pipeline filled with oil, preferably under pressure, transformers connected to the high-tension conductors and for supplying current to a branch circuit are disposed within the pipeline and submerged in the oil therein. Fig. 1 shows a transformer 10 mounted in a joint casing which connects two adjacent sections 1 of the pipe-line, the high-tension windings of the transformer being connected to the insulated conductors 2 within the pipe-line and the low-tension windings being connected to insulated terminals 20 passing through the casing, and to which the branch circuit is connected. The joint casing comprises end sections 3 which are connected in oiltight manner to the sections 1 of the pipeline by packing glands 4, and a central section 12 which supports the transformer and which is connected by packing glands 13, 14 to the end sections of the casing. Similar joint casings may be provided to allow the hightension conductors to be branched into another oil-filled pipe-line. Fig. 2 shows a casing 25 connecting adjacent sections 1 of a pipe-line, the casing having an outlet portion 26 adapted for connection to a branch pipe-line. Within the casing is an insulating block 28 provided with conducting rods 29 for connecting the conductors of the two adjacent pipe sections and also provided opposite the outlet 26 with connections 30 to which the conductors of the branch circuit may be connected. Bushings 32 having flanged ends 33 which bear against the ends of the pipe sections fit over the ends of the block 28, and are provided with rods 34 to which the conductors 2 are connected and which contact with the rods 29. A central aperture 36 through the bushings 32 and block 28 allows free oil communication between the two pipe sections, whilst a further aperture 37 in the block allows oil to flow into the branch pipe. The connections between the conductors 2 and the rods 34 may be surrounded individually by insulating sleeves or by a common sleeve 35. The pipe-line may be sectionalized by junction boxes 40, Fig. 4, having insulators 45 in which the conductors terminate. The conductors' ends are joined to insulated contacts which are adapted to be bridged by links 52. A pipe 41 allows oil communication between the two sections of the pipe-line.
