[Class 76] [Also in Group XXIII] A surfacing machine for leather and like material comprises an abradant drum, a feed roller which is supported so that each end is individually movable towards and from the drum against a resistance and a second rotatable roller which receives the thrust of the feed roller. A drum 30, e.g. one covered with helically wound abrasive paper, is mounted on a shaft 27 driven through a clutch by an electro-motor. Slides 35 having depending flanges 36 are mounted on slide ways on each side of the frame of the machine and are connected by slotted bell-crank levers 41 and links 45 to weighted levers 46 which are connected together by a foot bar 53, by pressure on which the slide may be moved away from the roller 30. Each slide carries on a vertical pivot a bearing 60 for the shaft of a roller 62 which is by this construction enabled to yield at either end in accordance with variations in the work. The roller 62 is rotated through belt gearing at a slower speed than the roller 30. A feed table 80 is mounted adjacent to the roller 62. A pinch roller 85 is journalled adjacent to the roller 62 in arms 88 pivotally mounted in standards 91 laterally adjustable on bolts 92a. Fine adjustment of the roller is provided by adjusting screws 94 and locking screws 98. Hides treated by the drum are delivered on to a series of bands passing over rollers 107, the rotation of which may be reversed to deliver the hides at either side of the machine. Air-blast nozzles 121 are provided to strip the hides from the drum. Wires 127, 130, connected to the frame and having metal fibres projecting therefrom, are provided for discharging static electricity from the drum and roller 62. Dust is collected by a funnel 135 connected to a suction device. Means is provided for removing dust from the abrasive surface of the drum comprising a tube 140, Fig. 6, having a number of fine jets, connected to a source of high pressure air by a flexible tube 161 and caused to reciprocate along the length of the drum by a link 154 and crank 155 actuated by worm gearing 148, 149.
