Abstract

Elements other than tin are alloyed with lead by treating a bath of molten lead or lead alloy with a flux consisting of a lead halide and an oxide of the metal to be alloyed with the lead. The oxide constituent of the flux may be in the form of an ore or residue or may be formed in situ by using compounds such as carbonates or nitrates, or lead antimonate, or mixtures such as silver chloride and lead oxide. The reaction may be carried out in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The spent flux may be regenerated for reuse by reducing part of the contained oxides, or the flux, after removal from the bath, may be smelted direct. The elements added to lead in this manner may include copper, silver, selenium, tellurium, bismuth, nickel, cadmium, arsenic, and antimony. Specification 465,764 is referred to.
