Abstract
472,926. Roofing; tiles. TURNER & NEWALL, Ltd., and ASHMAN, H. W. [Soc. Anon. Ciments Portland Artificiels Belges d'Harmignies, (partly).] May 25, 1936, No. 14783. [Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] Relates to roofing comprising a series of courses of tiles which are of the kind described in Specification 416,840* and consist of a corrugated part and a flat part that is nearly as wide as the corrugated part, the corrugated part of one tile overlapping the flat part of the next tile so that a continuous double covering is provided in the roof. According to the invention, each complete tile is formed with the crest of the corrugation nearest the flat part lower than the crests of the remaining corrugations by an amount equal to the thickness of the tile, and the underside of the flat part is lower than the plane containing the lowest parts of the corrugated part by an amount which may be equal to, or double, the thickness of the tile. The tile shown in Fig. 2, comprises a flat part 12, and three corrugations 14, 15, 16 with intervening flat parts 17, 18, and this tile is also provided with a cornermitre 19 and a joggle-mitre 20. The roof shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is formed by first laying, in overlapping courses, three members X, Y, Z, comprising only the flat parts 12 of the tiles, and on these members are then placed, in overlapping courses, three tiles A, B, C, followed by three further tiles D, E, F, the end corrugation 14 of each of which overlaps the corrugation 16 of the adjacent tile A, B, C. The tiles D, E have corner-mitres 19 to fit jogglemitres 20 of the tiles B, C respectively. The last tiles G, H, J, comprise only corrugated portions, the tiles G, H having corner-mitres 19 to fit joggle-mitres 20 of the tiles E, F respectively. There is no direct contact between the corrugated part of one tile and the flat part 12 of another tile except where successive courses overlap. A modified form of tile has a strip of the flat part 12 cut away near the lower edge, as shown in Fig. 6, so that the flat part is shorter than the corrugated part, and the junction of the two parts is mitred as shown at 21. In forming a roof to include such tiles, the flat parts which are first laid do not overlap, and, owing to the modified shape of the tiles, overlapping tiles are in contact over their whole width. The corrugated parts of the tiles may be of sinusoidal form, without any intervening flat portions.
