[Class 87 (ii)] In moulding hollow articles from pulp with a mould comprising a matrix a and a patrix k, layers of fibrous material are deposited on both the matrix and patrix while the latter is withdrawn from the matrix and the two layers are united by moving the patrix into the matrix. The matrix and patrix have liquid-permeable walls. The patrix k may be mounted on a hollow rod l moved by a hydraulic piston m. The patrix may correspond with only a part of the matrix and the final article will thus have a double layer over part of its surface. A chamber h is provided to which pulp is admitted through apertures i, pressure being put on the pulp or suction maintained through apertures c and the rod l. Water may be introduced through the rod l to the counter-mould k in order to keep it clean or to dilute the pulp progressively and so procure a smooth deposit. Steam or hot air or other drying medium may be introduced through the rod l, the patrix and the pulp layer and out through the matrix or it may proceed in the reverse direction, entering through the apertures c. The patrix may be open at the bottom and the drying medium may then be introduced through the apertures i. The matrix and patrix may be formed of sieve plates or perforated sheet metal. An intermediate liquid chamber and a sliding shutter may be provided between the matrix a and the chamber h so that pulp may be independently deposited on both the matrix and patrix. After deposition, the shutter is withdrawn and the patrix moved up to unite and consolidate the layers. Further layers may then be added.
