Abstract

The 2-nitro-3-alkoxy derivatives of diphenylene oxide are prepared by the action of nitrating agents upon 3-alkoxy diphenylene oxides which may also contain substituents in the 5-, 6-, 7- or 8-position. The starting materials are obtainable by the process described in Specification 470,021. By reduction of the 2-nitro-3-alkoxy compounds in known manner, the corresponding 2-amino-3-alkoxy compounds are obtained. Examples are given of the preparation of (1) 2-nitro-3-methoxy-diphenylene oxide from 3-methoxy-diphenylene oxide, obtained by methylation of the corresponding hydroxy compound; (2) 2-nitro-3-ethoxy-diphenylene oxide from 3-ethoxy-diphenylene oxide, obtained by ethylation of the corresponding hydroxy compound; (3) 2-nitro-3-methoxy-7-methyl-diphenylene oxide from 3-methoxy-7-methyl-diphenylene oxide, obtained by methylation of 3-hydroxy-7-methyl-diphenylene oxide; (4) 2 - nitro - 3 - methoxy - 7 - chloro - diphenylene oxide from 3 - hydroxy - 7 - chloro - diphenylene oxide by the same steps as in (3); (5) 2-nitro-3 : 7-dimethoxy-diphenylene oxide from 3 : 7-dimethoxy-diphenylene oxide, obtained by methylation of the 3 : 7-dimethoxy- or the 3-hydroxy-7-methoxy-derivatives; (6) 2-nitro-3-methoxy-6-methyl-diphenylene oxide from 3-hydroxy-6-methyl-diphenylene oxide. The preparation of the corresponding amino-derivatives is described in each case.
