Abstract

472,039. Dynamo lamps for cycles. RAWLINGS, G. W. Feb. 5, 1937, No. 528/36. [Classes 39 (ii) and 75 (iii)] In a combined electric lamp and generator for use on pedal cycles and motor-cycles, wherein the body of the generator is rigidly combined with the casing for the lamp and its reflector, and the casing is pivotally mounted on a bearing and provided with means so that the driving pulley of the generator can be kept in engagement with the road wheel of the cycle, the bearing 11 for the pivot 13 of the lamp casing 10, and the spring 19 for pressing the driving-pulley 28 against the wheel of the cycle, are located within the casing. The pivot 13 is inserted through a bush 12 in the bearing 11 and adjusted longitudinally by nuts 15, a nut 17 being provided for clamping it in position on the cycle. The spring 19 surrounding the bearing 11 has one end located in a hole in the casing, its other end being hooked around a lever 14 which is secured on the inner end of the pivot 13 and adapted to be engaged by a resilient plate riveted on the inner wall of the casing, a push-button being provided to disengage the resilient plate from the lever 14 to allow the spring 19 to swing the casing and bring the driving-pulley into engagement with the cycle wheel. The detent is re-engaged when the pulley is pulled away from the wheel. A cylindrical housing 20 on the underside of the casing 10 receives the parts of the dynamo, which is arranged so that its axis is offset and arranged radially relatively to the cycle wheel when in its operative position. The inner end cover 23 of the dynamo is secured against a flange 21 in the casing by an annular magnet 22 which is clamped in position by an elongated bearing member 24 screwing into the housing 20. One end of the winding of the dynamo rotor is earthed to the casing, while the other end is connected to a contact thimble 27 secured on insulating bushes 26 on the inner end of the dynamo shaft 25 adjacent to a contact spring 31 which bears on the thimble 27. This contact spring is mounted on insulating washers on the cover 23 and connected to a contact spring 32 which bears on the centre contact of the main lamp bulb 54. A lead 56 to a rear lamp bulb and a lead 57 to a shunt resistance for optionally dimming the bulb 54 are also connected to the contact spring 31. The bulb 54 is mounted in a metal bush 52 in the reflector 51, which also carries a pilot bulb 55 within a bush 53. The pilot bulb is adapted to be lighted independently by a battery or accumulator to which it may be connected by a rotary switch arm 40 operating over contact-studs 42 on an insulating plate 37, one contact-stud being arranged to connect the shunt resistance across the dynamo.
