Abstract

471,731. Valve relaying circuits. WHITE, E. L. C. Dec. 4, 1935, No. 33663. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Groups XIX and XXXVI] Pulse counting, frequency dividing, or measuring apparatus comprises a condenser which on the operation of a switching device is charged through one unidirectional conducting device and discharged through a similar device. An indicating or measuring device is connected in series with one of the unidirectional conducting devices. Fig. 1 shows a pentode valve V1 as the switching device controlling the charging of condensers C1, C2 through a diode V3. The condenser C1 is discharged between the pulses by a diode V2, each pulse increasing the charge of condenser C2. The pulses are applied to the valve V1 in a negative sense so as to cut-off anode current. The number of pulses may be measured by a voltmeter X measuring the voltage across condenser C2. In place of the voltmeter X a neon discharge tube, a grid-controlled gas discharge tube or a blocking oscillator may be used as the discharge device for the condenser C2. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage frequency divider in which the voltage across condenser C2 is applied to a blocking oscillator V<1>1 controlling a further counter and oscillator to give a two-stage frequency divider. A multi-vibrator may be used in place of a blocking-oscillator, Fig. 2 (not shown). The apparatus may be used as a frequency meter. the input being applied to the valve V1 and a voltmeter connected across condenser C2, the reading of which is directly proportional to frequency. Fig. 5 shows a frequency meter in which contact rectifiers and a meter M are employed with a bridge circuit.
