Abstract
471,231. Coated fabrics. SCHWARTZ, F. F., and CHAVANNES, M. A. Nov. 10, 1936, No. 30688. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1935. [Class 140] Air-permeable waterproof textiles are made by applying to a woven or knitted textile material a water-insoluble plastic or elastic substance, e.g. rubber, wax, or synthetic resin, in amount insufficient to close the interstices and subjecting the coated fabric to mechanical pressure, and if desired to heat, so as to reduce the size of the interstices to a point at which the passage of water therethrough is prevented. The fabric may be coated by immersion, spraying or painting. The fabric or the threads from which it is made may be impregnated before coating. The water-insoluble material may be applied in successive relatively thin layers with intermediate drying. In the example a woven cotton fabric having interstices of 0À2 to 0À1 sq. mm. in area is immersed in rubber latex containing vulcanizing agents, passed through squeeze rolls, dried and hotcalendered twice or thrice at 150‹ C. under a pressure of 5 to 30 kgs. per sq. cm. Vulcanization may be completed in an autoclave. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also reducing the size of the interstices by successive coatings without the use of pressure. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
