[Classes 75 (ii), 75 (iii), and 75 (iv)] Lighting apparatus enabling the illumination of an object to be varied at will, particularly for use in photographic studios, comprises a lamp housing 1 and a plane reflector 22 mounted to be individually slidable along and rotatable about a single vertical or horizontal bar 18 and also to be rotated each about an axis perpendicular to the bar. The housing 1 may be cubic and contain a silvered glass parabolic reflector 8, the reflector 22 may have an opaque white surface for diffusing reflected light, and they may be mounted on a standard 18 of circular cross-section by means of spigots 15, 15<1> rotatable in sleeves 17, 17<1> which are locked in position by set-screws operated by hand wheels or knobs 21, 21<1>. The standard 18 may be carried by a base 19 with castors 20. A domed or other diffusing screen 24 made of frosted glass, tracing cloth, or other translucent material, may be mounted to slide along and rotate about the standard 18 so that it can be applied to the lamp housing to prevent the emission of direct light. The screen 24 may be carried by a square flanged frame 25 to bear upon an apertured member 10 of the lamp housing. The frame 25 carries screwed pins 26 with wing nuts 27, the pins projecting through a pair of complementary arcuate slots 28 in a disc member 29 fixed to a sleeve 30 which is locked in position by a set-screw operated by a hand wheel or knob 21". The member 29 has a vertically extending recess 31 which permits the screw 24 to be lowered into position until the sleeve 30 rests on the sleeve 17. By inserting both pins 26 in the same slot 28, the lamp housing 1 and the screen 24 can then be rotated together. Alternatively, a diffusing screen may be secured directly to the lamp housing. In addition, a pair of flaps or shutters 32 may be hinged at 33 to the end of the lamp housing, the flaps being extended and carrying pins 34 which project through members 36 having arcuate slots concentric with the hinges, the flaps being locked in position by wing nuts 35.
