Abstract
470,546. Automatic control systems. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. Nov. 11, 1936, No. 30757. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1935. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXII and XL] Temperature.-In a heat treating process and apparatus for cutting, welding, or surface treating metals a portion of the work is heated to the required temperature and the work and source of heat moved relatively to present successive portions for heating, the movement being controlled by radiation from the heated surface. In cutting metal, oxygen or the like is admitted to the work through a valve controlled by the radiation. As shown, the source of heat is a blowpipe B carried by a bracket 19 and adjustable by a wheel 23, pinion and rack 22. The work P is traversed by a conveyer F driven from a motor M. Radiant energy from the point S is focused by a lens 26 in a tube 25 leading to a photoelectric cell E having a screen 27 adjusted by a hand wheel 28. The impulses from the cell pass along wires 45, 46 and after amplification, to a relay system 47, through contacts 53, 54 to a solenoid 37. In operation, valves Vm are opened for preheating and when the required temperature is reached the impulses of the photo-electric cell are amplified and transmitted to the relay system and thence to the solenoid to open oxygen valves Vo and to start the motor and work feed. At the end of the work traverse the cell is no longer excited by radiant energy and the application of heat ceases. Specifications 393,411 and 411,703, [both in Group XXII], are referred to.
