Abstract

Apparatus for applying liquid to a web or sheet of material comprises a trough for the liquid, a pair of mangle rolls mounted side by side and dipping into the liquid to form a nip close to the level of the liquid, a liquid supply, a feed pipe connecting p the supply to the trough and means for controlling the liquid feed to maintain a constant level in the trough. In a modification, the rolls may serve to support endless bands passing through the liquid and the nip and may be arranged so as to have the effect of upwardly extending the nip above the rolls. Fabric 4, Fig. 1, from a roll 5 passes around roll 8 and guide rolls 9 in a bath 10 and is directed upwardly to the nip of a pair of rubber or fabric-covered rolls 11. The trough 10 is filled with liquid to a level 12, slightly below the nip of rolls 11. The trough 10 is supported by standards 14 pivotally supported by links 15 from the frame and by links 17 from a rotatable shaft 16, the links 17 being provided with balance weights 18. A worm wheel 20, operated by a hand wheel <PICT:0469908/IV/1> <PICT:0469908/IV/2> 23 through a shaft 22 and worm 21, is fixed to the shaft 16 and serves to lower the trough from operable position. The left-hand roll 11 supported in slidably mounted bearings is urged to the right by a pressure bar 27 passing through a threaded block 31 on a lever 30, which is urged to rotate clockwise about a pivot 32 by a bell-crank lever 33 weighted at 34. The pressure between the rolls 11 can be adjusted by rotation of a hand wheel 40 and quickly released by a cam 37 rotated by a hand lever 36. Liquid is fed to the trough 10 from a closed container 41, Fig. 3, by a pipe 43. A fall in level of the liquid permits air to pass through an opening 44 in the cover of an extension 42 of the trough and by pipes 46, 47 to a point above the level of the liquid in the container 41, so that liquid flows through pipe 43. When the desired level is reached a float and needle 50 closes a valve 45 and stops the flow of air. When charging the container 41, any liquid in the pipe 47 may be drained by a three-way cock 51 and drain pipe 52. Specifications 470,333; and 470,334, [Group XIII], are referred to.
