Abstract
469,523. Cutting clay. KOIDL, T. Sept. 1, 1936, No. 23900. Convention date, Sept. 2, 1935. [Class 87 (ii)] Building stones of any profile, particularly with tongued and grooved ends, are cut from a " string " of clay 17 by tensioned wires 13 which are guided while cutting transversely of the string by a stationary holder 6 and, while cutting in, at an angle to, or opposite to the direction of the string, by one or more movable holders 10 and the holder 6 jointly. A frame 1 is adapted to be reciprocated on ball races 3, being guided by rolls 4 on a frame 5 which carries the holders 6. The frame 1 carries the holders 10 and pivoted levers 9 which are connected to arms 11 carrying rolls 7 moving in slots in the holders 6 and rolls 12 moving in slots in the holders 10. The two cutting wires 13 are connected under tension to the rolls 12. The frame 5 is mounted on a table 25 which is moved to and fro on balltracks 19 according to the speed of the string. The string 17 advances over an oiling roller 30 until it contacts with a stop plate 21 when it carries the table 25 forward with it. The cutting frame 1 is then reciprocated by hand or automatically. The lever 20 is operated to withdraw the plate 21 from the path of the clay and to return the table 25 to its original position. In order to produce a cut of the form shown in Fig. 7, the holders 6, 10 have slots of the form shown in Fig. 4. As the roller 7 passes along the first portion of the slot in the holder 6, the two wires 13 produce the single cut 36. During the passage of the roller 7 from the first to the second bend in the holder 6, the roller 12 is forced to move up to the bend in the holder 10 and the wires 13 are rotated and moved to produce the double cut 37. The roll 12 is then at rest while the roll 7 moves to produce the upper horizontal cut and the first two motions are then repeated in the reverse order. A pawl 33 is provided which is engaged by a pin 35 on the holder 6 so as to move and block the roll 12 from returning down its original path.
