Abstract
Oils of high boiling-point suitable for use as fuel or diesel oils are obtained from the products formed in the extraction or mild hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials by subjecting the liquid extraction or conversion products, after separation of solid constituents to extraction with liquefied hydrocarbons, containing 1--3 carbon atoms in the molecule, at elevated temperatures below the critical temperature of the extraction agent and under pressure, and mixing the undissolved fraction with a middle oil of cyclic nature to constitute the desired fuel or diesel oil, the dissolved fraction, after removal of solvent, being used as a pasting agent for fresh carbonaceous material. The initial material is preferably pasted with a material transferring hydrogen, e.g. tetrahydronaphthalene decahydronaphthalene or their homologues or octahydroindene or hydroanthracene or a tar middle oil prepared under strong hydrogenating conditions. Finely ground coal pasted with middle oil obtained in a previous operation and with the addition of 1,15 per cent ammonium chloride and 0,06 per cent tin oxalate is mixed with two parts of the heavy products withdrawn from the separator of the hydrogenation plant. The mixture is heated with hydrogen under 250 atmos. pressure to 420 DEG C. in a preheater and then led through a reaction chamber the throughput being 0,18 kilograms of coal per litre of reaction space per hour. The products are passed into a separator maintained at 410 DEG C. from the upper end of which hydrogen and vapours escape. High boiling products are withdrawn from the lower end and used in part for pasting fresh coal as described above. The remainder is mixed with the products condensed in the cold separator and the mixture after centrifuging is treated at 90 DEG C. in an autoclave with five times its volume of liquified propane. The dissolved fraction comprising mainly middle oil, after separation of solvent, is used as a pasting agent. The undissolved fraction having a m.p. of 50--60 DEG C. is mixed with 25 parts of an oil boiling between 200 and 325 DEG C. obtained by the distillation of high temperature tar and a heating oil is obtained having a m.p. between 0 and 10 DEG C. and which forms no deposit on storage.
