Abstract

468,813. Screw-conveyers. SCHWABACH, G. July 14, 1936, No. 19574. [Class 78 (i)] In a device wherein ashes &c., led from a furnace by a pipe 2 extending below the surface of water in a trough, are conveyed away by a worm, the worm 3, Fig. 1, horizontally arranged in the trough 1 containing water consists of a spirally wound band without a longitudinal shaft, the outer surfaces of the spiral turns operating with a scraping action on the bottom of the trough and a discharge device is provided at the discharge end of the horizontal worm for lifting the ashes &c. from the trough, which discharge device is driven in common with the worm 3. The discharge device may be a similarly constructed spiral band 5 arranged in an upwardly inclined end 6 of the trough and connected to the worm 3 by a universal coupling 7. Various different forms of driving couplings are described and shown, such as a sliding pin, a dog clutch, and bevel gearing. The worms may be driven separately by a common driving member. In Fig. 8, a motor 18a drives a bevel wheel 27 meshing with bevel wheels 25, 26 on the worms, a compression spring 24 exerting a pressure on the worm 5 in the direction of its axis. The members 25, 26 may be conical friction wheels engaging conical surfaces of a driving member arranged with a horizontal axis. In another construction, a motor 18, Fig. 10, drives two outside shafts 30, 31 coupled together at 32 and provided with chain wheels 34, 38. Chains 35, 39 pass over the wheels 34, 38 and drive chain wheels 36, 40 on the respective worms. The driving shafts 30, 31 may be arranged within the trough. In another form, the two worms are driven from the motor by two sets of bevel gearing connected together by a chain drive. Instead of a discharging worm, the worm 3, Fig. 14, is provided with a shovel 52 for lifting the ashes which are forced up the inclined end 6 of the trough. The worm 3 is prevented from rising by a pair of longitudinal rollers 42. Instead of the end, one side wall of the trough may be inclined, the shovel being horizontal and connected to a disc bearing a second shovel. This construction may be used with two conveyers 3 conveying in opposite directions to a central discharge incline in the trough wall. For conveying large amounts of ashes, the worm 3 at its discharge end has secured to it a large disc provided with shovels similar to vanes. As shown in Fig. 23, the discharging device may be a chain 66 driven by a chain wheel 67 on the conveying screw and provided with cups 70.
