Abstract
Aminotriazines or derivatives thereof containing at least one replaceable hydrogen atom are condensed with aldehydes or substances yielding aldehydes other than aliphatic monoaldehydes in the presence, if desired, of a solvent, diluent or condensing agent. Suitable aminotriazines include melamine, melam, melem, melone, ammelin, ammelide, formoguanamine, 2 - chloro - 4 : 6 - diamino - 1 : 3 : 5-triazine, 2-(p-oxyphenyl)-4 : 6-diamino-1 : 3 : 5-triazine, 2 - phenyl - 4 - amino - 6 - oxy - 1 : 3 : 5-triazine, aryl-, alkyl- and aralkylmelamines, and the iso-derivatives of the aminotriazines. Suitable aldehydes include aromatic and heterocyclic aldehydes such as benzaldehyde and furfurol. Other substances capable of forming resinous condensates with aldehydes such as phenols, urea, thiourea, or aniline may be present during the condensation or their preformed condensates may be blended with the condensates. Other substances such as dyestuffs, fillers, softeners or water-repelling agents may be added at any stage of the condensation. The products may be used in the manufacture of adhesives, lacquers, in the plastic industry, in the manufacture of laminated products and in the textile industry for anti-creasing and matting effects. In an example, melamine is condensed with benzaldehyde. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of products prepared by the condensation of melamine and (1) cinnamic aldehyde, (2) hexahydrobenzaldehyde, (3) terephthalic aldehyde, (5) polyglyoxal, and (6) furfurol, and (4) of 3-amino-1 : 2 : 4-phentriazoxime and benzaldehyde. Specification 466,096 is referred to. Hexahydrobenzaldehyde is formed by heating the acid obtained by saponifying and subsequently acidifying the oxide of cyclohexylacetic acid ester obtained by condensing cyclohexanone with chloracetic acid ester. Terephthalic aldehyde is prepared by the oxidation of p-xylene with chromic acid in the presence of acetic anhydride and sulphuric acid followed by saponification.
