Abstract

468,735. Preventing inductive disturbance. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 27, 1936, No. 29177. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1935. [Class 40 (iv)] The mutual inductance and capacity between each pair of circuits of a multi-core cable are adjusted within a repeater section at a panel or panels at which each circuit intersects every other circuit. The adjusting unit comprises coils 48, 49 in the sides of one circuit and an intermediate movable coil 50 in one side of the other circuit, and a condenser having fixed plates 52, 53 connected to the sides of one circuit and a movable plate 54 connected to one side of the other circuit. Each fixed coil 48, 49 is shunted by a resistance and inductance in series. If there are a small number of circuits, say six, they are led across a single square panel in the manner shown in Fig. 2, so that each of the circuits 1-6 intersects every other circuit. If there are a large number of circuits, they are arranged in groups, and adjustment within each group is made at a square panel, while adjustment between each two groups is made at a rectangular panel shown in Fig. 3; where each of the circuits 1-6 intersects each of the circuits 7-12. The portion of a panel at an intersecting point is shown in Fig. 4, 43, 44 being the incoming and outgoing terminals of one circuit and 45, 46 those of the other circuit. Figs. 8-12 show the spacing of the square and rectangular panels for one up to five groups of circuits, the arrangement being such that the addition of a group or groups to the cable merely requires the interpolation of further panels without disturbing the existing panels. When the scheme is extended beyond six groups, shifting of one or two existing panels may be necessary. It will be noticed that in all cases the panels form a series of groups in which each circuit appears on a panel only once in each group, and that the number of intersections along any pair of circuits preceding or succeeding their point of intersection is the same or differs by unity, thus equalizing the phase shift.
