Abstract
Fluorine and aluminium are separated from solutions obtained by treatment of raw phosphates with acids such as sulphuric, nitric, or hydrochloric acids, as a complex compound containing F, Ca, SO4, Al, Si, and H2O in the ratio of 34, 21, 4, 4, 24, the ratio of the components of the precipitate present in insufficient quantity in the solution being raised to the necessary amount by addition to the solution or to the acid used. Complete precipitation of aluminium is preferably ensured by having an excess of the remaining components present. Fluorine is preferably added to the acid used as hydrogen fluoride or a soluble fluoride, and precipitation effected in the presence of relatively large quantities of preformed precipitate. In an example, raw phosphate of specified composition is dissolved in nitric acid to which are added small quantities of hydrofluoric and sulphuric acid, precipitation being effected in five hours. From the purified solution, a nearly pure-dicalcium phosphate and a solution of calcium nitrate of 40--45 per cent strength may be obtained. The fluorine content of the solution may be diminished further by adding a little aluminium nitrate and more hydrofluoric and sulphuric acid. The invention may be applied to the production of a phosphoric acid free from lime and aluminium by mixing an aluminium phosphate with a calcium phosphate in such proportions that Ca and Al are present in the ratio of 21 to 4 and treating the mixture with sulphuric and hydrofluoric acids in the ratio of 34 to 12. Fluorine may be recovered from the complex precipitate as a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and silicon tetrafluoride by heating with concentrated sulphuric acid, or the silicon tetrafluoride may be driven off first by heating to 300--400 DEG C., and the hydrofluoric acid be obtained separately by heating with sulphuric acid. Alternatively the precipitate may be decomposed in the presence of steam at 800--900 DEG C. in admixture with silica or clay to obtain the fluorine wholly as hydrofluoric acid, which may be returned to the process if required.
