[Class 60] [Also in Groups XIII and XXXVI] A barrel for use in cleaning metal, de-greasing, sawdustdrying, electroplating, &c., comprises a tapered barrel portion 1, made of earthenware or metal, which may have an insulating coating of synthetic resin, &c., and of circular or polygonal cross-section, united by flanges 5 and bolts 4 to a tapered portion 2 having an internal spiral rib 3. The portions 1, 2 have thereon annular ribs 6, and the barrel is supported by rollers 8, on brackets 9, which engage metal rings 7 on the flanges 5 and the ribs 6, the barrel being rotated by chain gearing 11, 16 and an electric motor 17 ; the outer end of the barrel is partially closed by an annular plate 13. The barrel is disposed in a casing 10 having an opening 18 for insertion, by an adjustably mounted scoop 19, of the articles to be treated and also drying, cleaning, &c. material. The barrel is rotated in one direction for cleaning, and the rotation is then reversed, the articles, fluid, and cleaning-material being fed by the rib 3 out of the barrel on to a sieve 29, which may be agitated, removably supported in a shoot 30 leading to a receptacle 31, a pipe may lead from the shoot to the bottom of the receptacle 31, from which liquid is drawn by a pipe 35 and a pump 33 for supply through a pipe 36 to the barrel portion 1. The sieve is made of nickel, stainless steel, or other non-corrosive material, and may have slits 37 in pressed-up portions 38, Fig. 4. When the barrel is to be used for electrodeposition, electrolyte 39 and the articles to be treated are placed in the barrel, the anode being in the electrolyte and the cathode 27 in contact with the articles, current being supplied by leads from terminals 28. The barrel portion may rotate in the receptacle 31.
