Abstract
466,614. Lubricator couplings. TECALEMIT, Ltd. Jan. 27, 1936, No. 2590. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1935. [Class 99 (i)] A lubricator coupling 28 is connected to a lubricant - receiving nip ple 50 by a plurality of clamping jaws 36, which are subjected to the com bined action of a spring 38 and the pressure o: the passing lubricant act ing on a piston 40 inter posed between the saic jaws and spring, anc fluid tightness betweer the coupling and nipple is secured by metal seal ing elements 58, 64 which are disposed with in the former in such a manner as to permit considerable angular displacement between the two parts 28, 50. The sealing element 58 is slidable in the piston 40, and is formed with a spherical surface 60 for contact with the dirt-cutting edge 52 of the nipple, and the element 64, which is spring-pressed and is provided with a lubricant passage 68, is slidable in an elastic packing 62 located within a recess at the inner end of the element 58 and terminates in a hemispherical tip to engage the edge 56 of the inlet opening 54 of the nipple. The arrangement is such that, when it is desired to supply lubricant to a nipple, the coupling is pressed against the nipple and the jaws 36 and piston 40 are forced inwardly against the spring 38 a distance sufficient to permit the jaws to clear the head of the nipple, whereupon the spring will force the jaws against a tapering cam surface 34 at the outer end of the coupling and inwardly into engagement with the spherical under-surface 46 of the nipple. The lubricant supply valve is then opened and the action of the spring 38 will be supplemented by the pressure of the lubricant upon the piston 40 to force the jaws more firmly into contact with the nipple ; at the same time this pressure acts upon the upper ends of the elements 58, 64 to force them outwardly into sealing contact with the edges 52, 56 of the nipple respectively. The coupling may be provided with a valve 88 for relieving the pressure therein, if necessary, prior to disconnecting it from the nipple, disconnection of the two parts being effected by tilting them appreciably out of axial alignment, and the valve may carry a wire 94 for cleaning the outlet 70 of the lubricant passage 68.
