Abstract

Monoazo dyes are made by coupling a diazo compound of an amine of the general formula <FORM:0465957/IV/1> (Ar = a phenyl residue, X = an alkyl residue of at least 10 and not more than 20 carbon atoms, Y = a phenyl residue) with a naphthol di- or tri-sulphonic acid, a 1-acidylamino-8-naphthol disulphonic acid or a 1-sulphoarylpyrazolone, the coupling components being devoid of long chain alkyl residues. They dye wool from an acid or neutral bath in shades fast to washing and milling or fulling. In examples, dyes from the following components are described: diazo components--m- or p-aminobenzene sulphon-N-dodecylanilide, 3-amino - 4 - methylbenzene - 1 - sulphon - N - dodecylanilide, m - aminobenzenesulphon - N - cetylanilide, 3 - amino - 6 - ethoxybenzene - 1 - sulphon - N - dodecylanilide; coupling components--N - n - butyryl - or N - acetyl - H-or K-acid, 2-naphthol-6 : 8- or 3 : 6-disulphonic acid, 1 - (2<1> : 5<1> - dichloro - 4<1> - sulphophenyl)-3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone, 1 - naphthol - 3 : 6-disulphonic acid, 1 - naphthol - 3 : 6 : 8-trisulphonic acid, 1 - (4<1> - sulphophenyl) - 5 - pyrazolone - 3 - carboxylic acid. According to the Provisional Specification, Y in the above formula is aryl and any coupling component devoid of long chain alkyl residues and having at least one SO3H or COOH group may be used, e.g. naphthol and aminonaphthol sulpho acids or their N-derivatives, naphthylamine sulpho acids and sulphoarylpyrazolones.
