Abstract

A substitute for whole or skimmed milk for use in feeding pigs, calves, &c. is produced by grinding maize, soya beans, barley or ground nuts, which may be germinated, with water, skimmed milk, whey or the like, heating and fermenting the pulp obtained with enzymes, such as peptase and malt enzymes, to break down the proteins and carbohydrates therein to more soluble products, emulsifying cod liver oil or other vitamin-containing oil or fatty substance therewith, homogenizing and drying by atomizing in hot gases. Glucose, maltose or both may be added to the watery pulp, and part of the fat content may be replaced thereby when the product is to be used for feeding calves. In an example, malt is added to the pulp at 45 DEG C. and the mixture heated step by step to 70 DEG C. The drying may be effected by spraying, e.g. by means of a rotary atomizer such as is described in Specification 430,139, [Group XXIX], into hot air, combustion gases, nitrogen, &c. The product may be dissolved in water, skimmed milk, &c. to form an emulsion.ALSO:A milk substitute is produced by grinding maize, soya beans, barley or ground nuts, which may be germinated, with water, skimmed milk, whey, or the like, heating and fermenting the pulp obtained with enzymes, such as peptase and malt enzymes, to break down the proteins and carbohydrates therein to more soluble products, emulsifying cod liver oil or other vitamin-containing oil or fatty substance therewith, homogenizing and drying by atomizing in hot gases.
