Abstract

<PICT:0465757/III/1> In the separation of liquid mixtures, particularly alcohol and water, by the addition of an entrainer body, such as benzene, to form a ternary azeotropic mixture in a dehydrating column, the entrainer in the form of vapour is supplied at a level lower than that of the inlet into the same column of the mixture to be separated, the fluids then flowing in countercurrent to each other. Benzene vapour from air evaporator K is admitted to a column I through a pipe t below a pipe g through which aqueous alcohol vapour issues from a distilling column E in which fermented wine is distilled. Reflux returns to the column from a condenser V, the watery layer being discharged to a separator P wherein additional water is added to facilitate separation. The liquids from the mixer P separate in a vessel Q, the dilute alcohol being returned to the distilling column E through a preheater C and the benzene to the vaporizer K. The wash liquor may be caused to boil under reduced pressure in a boiler F and the vapours, compressed by a compressor R, utilized to heat the vaporizer K, a vaporizer L at the base of the dehydrating column, and the distilling column respectively. Specification 409,053 is referred to.
