Abstract

464,455. Grinding rolls. TRIGGS, W. W. (Norton Co.) Jan. 1, 1936, No. 31. [Class 60] A machine for grinding rolls, for example for rolling-mills, with a convex, concave, or parallel contour, comprises a base 10 on which is longitudinally reciprocated a work table 11 on which is pivoted at 17 a swivel table 16 carrying a headstock 18 and a tailstock 19 for supporting the work 20, which is ground by a grinding-wheel 14 mounted on a slide adjustable towards and from the work ; the movement of the table 11 is reversed by a lever 28 actuated by dogs 26, 27 on the table. The table 16 is swivelled by hydraulic means comprising two cylinders 37, 40, carried by the table 11 and having movable therein pistons 36 41 connected respectively by link; to brackets 39, 43 on the ends of the table 16. Fluid is supplied to and exhausted from opposite ends of the cylinders by pipes 45, 46 supplied from a reversing valve 35 to which fluid is supplied by a pump 31 driven by an electric motor on the table 11. The valve 35 is moved in one direction by a spring 53 and in the other direction by a solenoid 52, the current to which is controlled by a switch 54 actu ated, through a link 55, by the reversing lever 28. Movement of the table 16 about the pivot 17 is controlled, to give the required contour to the roll, by screws 65, 92 engaging nuts connected to the brackets 39, 43, the screws being rotated through gears 76, 91 actuated by rack bars 75, 90 connected to slides 62, 87 moved with the table 11 by bars 63 68 along guide bars 60, 85, which are adjustably pivoted on the base 10 at 61, 86: the bars are set as shown in dotted lines 60a, 85a to give a concave contour to the roll. The rack bars have the racks adjustably mounted thereon by a screw 79 and nuts 80, 81, Fig. 6, to take up backlash, and the bars are also adjustably connected to the slides 62, 87, by screwed parts 136 and nuts 137, 138 to give the table an initial bow or flex to counteract spring during grinding. When concave rolls are to be ground, the operation of the reversing valve 35 is reversed by a reversing switch 130, the arm 131 of which carries a roll 132 running on a cam 133 carried by the bar 60, so that the switch is operated when the bar is moved to the angular position 60a for concave rolls. In order that a greater hydraulic pressure may be applied to the cylinder 37 than to cylinder 40, in order to overcome the different friction at the headstock end and the tailstock end of the table due to the greater weight of the headstock, fluid passes to the reversing valve through a valve casing 102, Fig. 8, containing two valves 108, 117 given the requisite pressure by springs 109, 118 adjustable by screws 110, 119. Specifications 6784/01, [Class 60], and 433,114 are referred to.
