[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XVII] Elongated articles such as cigarettes, pencils or sweets are passed either singly or in groups to a packing place by reciprocating members 3. During their passage they contact with feeling mechanism which comprises conducting rings 5 suspended on rods 6, 7. Unless such rings are raised, as shown, they complete an electric circuit when the rods are periodically-energized by mechanism synchronized with the forward movement of the pushers 3. The number of rings corresponds to the normal number of articles in a group. If each article of a group, or a single article in the case of the packing of single articles, passes properly the corresponding ring 5 is raised and the circuit which would have been made by the synchronous mechanism is broken, but if an article fails to pass, the corresponding ring remains hung on both rods and the circuit is completed by the synchronous mechanism. Completion of the circuit may give a signal or operate a clutch to stop the machine. The conducting rings may be enclosed in insulating members which contact with the articles.
