Abstract

464,214. Variable speed gearing. HEJDUK, F., and NEUMANN, J. Dec. 2, 1935, No. 33347. Convention date, April 17. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] In a variable-ratio gear consisting of a main .transmission including a differential gear, the ratio of which is modified by a secondary transmission, the shaft of the main transmission has fitted thereon an eccentric or cam which causes oscillation of a lever which drives the secondary transmission shaft through a selflocking free-wheel friction coupling, while backward movement is prevented by an additional friction pawl. The rotary motion of any type of measuring apparatus, e.g. a liquid passage meter, is transmitted through gearing 20, 21 to a shaft 22 on which are keyed a cam 24, Fig. 4, and a wheel 23, Fig. 2, forming part of a differential gear, the wheel 37 of which is free on shaft 22 and drives through gearing 38, 40 a counting mechanism 39. The cam 24 oscillates a lever 26 free on a shaft 27 and the lever is connected to a disc 28 adapted to drive through a friction ratchet device 29, 30 a casing 32 which is connected through the shaft 27 and gearing 33, 34 with the carrier 35 of the differential. Backward movement of the casing is prevented by a detent 44. The lever 26 is urged towards the cam by a spring 43 and its throw is adjusted to vary the speed of the counting-mechanism by the use of an adjustable stop which may comprise an adjustable screw 41 on the lever coacting with a pin 421 which may either be fixed or, as shown, mounted on a member such as a thermostat 52 to eliminate the effect of temperature on the volume measured. The pin 42<1> may, if desired, be fitted with a visible indicator to show the net gear ratio. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a construction in which the secondary transmission comprises a friction disc movable across the face of a gear-wheel 4 driven from the main shaft. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
